Why Creativity Is Vital for Conservation and How Art Is Helping Save Our Natural World

I've been thinking a lot lately about why I paint.

Not the technical answer. The brushes, the light, the hours in the studio. There’s a deeper answer. The one that gets me out of bed before sunrise and keeps me at the canvas long after the day has ended.

The truth is, I paint because I believe the natural world deserves to be seen. Really seen. Not just photographed ( even though I’ve been a pro photographer for over 15 years!) or documented, but felt. And I believe that art, more than almost anything else, has the power to make people feel something so deeply that they want to protect it.

That belief is at the heart of everything I do in my art studio of Zahrina Gallery . And it's why my relationship with Taronga Zoo, Sydney means so much to me.

The Role of Creativity in Conservation

We live in a world that is drowning in data. We know the statistics on species loss, on ocean acidification, on deforestation. We know the numbers. And yet, for so many people, that knowledge doesn't translate into action.

Why? Because data speaks to the mind. Art speaks to the heart.

When someone stands in front of one of my Ocean Lightscapes paintings and feels the stillness of the sea, when they sense the light moving across the water, the quiet power of something vast and ancient, something shifts in them. They don't just understand that the ocean matters. They feel it. And that feeling is what drives real, lasting change.

This is why I believe creativity is not a luxury in the conservation conversation. It is essential. Artists, storytellers, musicians, filmmakers. We are the ones who can reach the people that reports and statistics cannot. We translate the complexity of the natural world into something human beings can hold in their hearts.

My Connection to Taronga Zoo

I am incredibly proud and humbled to serve on the Committee Board for Taronga Zoo. It is one of the most meaningful roles I hold, not just as an artist, but as a human being who cares deeply about the future of our planet.

Taronga is not just a zoo. It is one of Australia's most important wildlife conservation organisations, working tirelessly to protect endangered species, restore habitats, and educate the next generation of conservationists. The work they do, both here in Australia and across the globe, is extraordinary. And being part of that work, even in a small way, is something I don't take lightly.

As a Board member, I see firsthand the dedication, the science, the passion, and the sheer determination that goes into protecting the species and ecosystems that so many of us take for granted. It has deepened my own commitment to using my art as a vehicle for change.

It needs scientists and rangers and policy makers, and it needs artists. It needs people who can make others fall in love with what we stand to lose.

That is what I am here to do. One painting at a time.
